History of Burke
The Burke area has a history stretching back thousands of years through Native American habitation, followed by European settlement beginning in the 18th century. In 1728, Francis Coffer received a land grant covering property in what is now Burke. Silas Burke, for whom the community would eventually be named, was born in 1796 and later became a prominent local landowner, farmer, businessman, and public official. Transportation helped establish Burke as a recognizable community. The Orange and Alexandria Railroad was chartered in 1848, and Burke’s Station subsequently developed as a stop along the route. The first Burke’s Station post office was established in 1852.
The Civil War brought military activity to the community because of its railroad connection and proximity to Washington. In April 1865, one of Fairfax County’s final Civil War skirmishes occurred in Burke. The community remained predominantly agricultural after the war, but substantial changes arrived during the 20th century. Residents successfully opposed a proposal to construct a major international airport in Burke during the 1950s; the project that became Washington Dulles International Airport was instead developed near Chantilly. Burke Lake Park opened in 1963, and the large Burke Centre planned community was established in 1977. Continued suburban development transformed Burke into the residential community it is today.
