Located in Fairfax County, Virginia, Springfield is a CDP with a population of 30,484 as of the 2010 census. It is a part of Northern Virginia, the most populous region of the Washington Metro Area. Springfield covers a total area of 7.9 square miles of land. 

Between 1796 and 1800 a grist mill was constructed in the area of what is now Springfield. Owned by James Keene, it served farms in the area for around sixty years before its discontinuation. 

The town of Springfield was founded in 1847 around a station on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad. The community was named for “Springfield Farm” which was owned by Henry Daingerfield, and Alexandria businessman. Soon after, a post office was completed in Springfield, and the community continued to grow from there. 

The community remained small and rural until 1946, when real estate developer Edward Carr decided to subdivide the area for suburban development. The developed area grew quickly, and in 1950 it had an estimated population of 1,000. By 1960 it had a population of over 10,000, and by 1970 it was over 25,000. 

Today, Springfield is an excellent place to live. Niche.com describes the community in these words: 

"Springfield is a suburb of Washington, D.C. with a population of 32,960. Springfield is in Fairfax County. Living in Springfield offers residents an urban suburban mix feel and most residents own their homes. In Springfield there are a lot of restaurants and parks. Many young professionals live in Springfield and residents tend to lean liberal. The public schools in Springfield are above average."
